Open letter to the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention

At the current Triple Conference of the Parties to the Global Conventions on Chemicals and Waste (Geneva, May 1-12, 2023), more than 40 organizations signed an open letter to the delegates of the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Conditional Consent Procedure for Certain Highly Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade. Third day of the Triple Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Chemicals and Waste

The work of the Triple Conference of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (BRC) continues in Geneva. Among the key issues discussed at the plenary session on May 3 was a proposal to create a new annex – Annex 8 – to the Rotterdam Convention on Prior Informed Consent in Relation to Trade in Especially Dangerous Pesticides and Industrial Chemicals.

First results of the Triple Conference of the Parties to the Chemical Conventions of 2023

The next Triple Conference of the Parties to the Chemical Conventions (Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm – BRS) opened on May 1, 2023 in Geneva.

 Although only the first day of negotiations has passed, it has already been possible to include the pesticide methoxychlor under the jurisdiction of the Stockholm Convention without exceptions.

Strengthening national capacity for the implementation and ratification of Chemical and Waste Conventions in Tajikistan (2021-2022)

Project stages:

  • Establishment of the Interdepartmental Committee on Chemicals and Waste Management in Tajikistan (ICCW);
  • Facilitating the development, adoption and enforcement of the regulatory framework for accession to the Rotterdam and Minamata Conventions;
  • Creation of a national instrument for the exchange of information between all stakeholders involved in the implementation of the project;
  • Conducting trainings, capacity building and awareness raising.

Within the framework of the project on capacity building for the implementation of international chemical conventions, information seminars were held with key ministries of the Republic of Tajikistan (RT) on chemicals and waste management (Ministry of Industry and New Technologies, Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, Ministry of Agriculture, Customs Service under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Tajikistan), awareness-raising trainings with local authorities, local communities, NGOs, Mass media (10 trainings), a large number of information brochures on the management of chemicals and waste, calendars for 2022 “Chemical safety of Tajikistan through international conventions” have been developed.

Assistance in the development of Technical Regulations (TR) on the safety of paints and varnishes of Tajikistan (2021-2022).

Participation in the development of TR together with the Department of Technical Standardization and Standardization of the Agency for Standardization, Metrology, Certification and Trade Inspection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan (Tajikstandart). A review of the sale of lead-containing oil paints in the Dushanbe retail chain in 2022 was conducted. Much attention is paid to holding working meetings, raising awareness on the developed TR of key ministries, local authorities, NGOs, paint manufacturers, buyers, local communities of Tajikistan.

Developed and printed information brochures: Lead paints (questions and answers), Lead poisoning and health, calendars “A world without lead pollutants” for 2021. Information brochures are widely distributed to participants during seminars and trainings.
